KollabNet "Knowledge Accounting" Shown at COFES2004
Company slogan, "It's what
you know!", resonates with attendees
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KollabNet, Inc.--a Lancaster, Pennsylvania
firm--demonstrated the just-announced enterprise
version of its KollabNet software at COFES2004 (www.cofes.com).
VP of Product Engineering Igal Kaptsan
describes the product: "In any design process,
valuable intellectual capital is discarded, as
concepts are refined into a final product.
KollabNet makes the design engineer more
productive by capturing knowledge through
linking data in office productivity
applications, CAD/CAE/PDM/PLM programs, and
more. So a change in any document is immediately
reflected in all the others--or prevented, with
a notice."
"But the real power of KollabNet is in its
rationale capture. Every DesignGram stores the
reasons and basis for every change - starting
with requirements capture in the concept phase,
through design, release to manufacturing, and
later re-use," said Kaptsan. "That way, a
complete history is available at any point."
KollabNet has termed this groundbreaking
application, "Knowledge Accounting (tm)". "We
don't create knowledge, and we don't tell
designers how to design. We just help them keep
track of what they do--in a fun and powerful
way," added Kaptsan.
KollabNet's enterprise version was publicly
demonstrated for the first time at COFES2004.
"Real productivity comes when you're able to
share and link KollabNet DesignMaps throughout
your organization and those of subcontractors,"
said Kaptsan. "KollabNet stores design knowledge
effortlessly, with little or no typing. Yet it
preserves all design decisions in the
DesignGrams that make up each DesignMap, each of
which stores a full history of individual
changes and the rationale for them."
Comments from users and press were
overwhelmingly positive. In his review of
COFES2004, editor Ralph Grabowski of upFront
ezine (www.upfrontezine.com)
noted: "Leaving the best for last, KollabNet is
amazing software. Igal Kaptsan showed how his
software enforces design intent, reading and
writing specs issued in Word, Excel, SolidWorks,
and Inventor -- recognizing values, converting
units, and linking parameters.
"For example, a specification written in Word
is captured by KollabNet, and then output to
Excel, where it drives dimensions in a metric
SolidWorks drawing linked to an Imperial
Inventor drawing.
"When changes are made, a dialog box pops up,
requiring you to document reasons for changes.
Capturing design intent."
